A 14-year-old student reportedly opened fire at Joseph-Lakanal middle school in Aubagne, France on Thursday, targeting the school principal and a teacher before being taken into custody. The incident has shocked the local community, and investigators are currently trying to determine the motive behind the attack.

According to initial reports, the teenager managed to bring a hunting rifle into the school premises. At approximately 9 a.m. local time, he discharged the weapon, injuring the principal and a teacher, both of whom were immediately hospitalized. While the extent of their injuries remains unclear, authorities confirmed that none of the students were physically harmed during the incident.

Police forces quickly arrived at the scene following calls from staff and students. Officers managed to apprehend the suspect without further incident. For now, the school has been evacuated and closed for the day as a security measure while forensic teams comb the area for evidence.

Police spokespersons stated that an investigation is underway to discern how the adolescent gained possession of the firearm and the events leading up to the shooting. They are also questioning the suspect, whose identity has been withheld due to his minor status, in an effort to establish his motives.

Local authorities have issued statements condemning the attack and emphasizing the need for cooperation from the public in the investigation. The acting mayor of Aubagne, Victoria Bonnet, expressed her distress over the incident, stating, "Our thoughts are with the victims and their families. This is a serious breach of safety in a place meant for education and growth."

Parents and guardians rushed to the school upon hearing the news, leading to chaotic scenes as they sought to ensure the safety of their children. Many expressed concerns over the existing security protocols and called for action to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Education officials have activated crisis management protocols, offering counseling support to students and staff affected by the event. French Education Minister Gabriel Attal announced measures to enhance security across educational institutions in the region, reiterating the government’s commitment to maintaining safe learning environments for students.

This shooting comes amid growing concerns in France over the need for stricter regulations on firearms access. The country has experienced a series of high-profile incidents in recent years, leading to increased public debate around gun control legislation.

The situation highlights ongoing issues related to school safety and the influence of youth access to weapons. As authorities continue their investigations, the community remains vigilant, awaiting developments and seeking assurances for a safer educational environment.
