Violence erupted across France on Saturday during a fresh wave of demonstrations over hardship in schools and the rising cost of living. The French government said at least 1,200 people were arrested amid what it described as an escalation in violence, with an estimated 550,000 people taking part in protests nationwide.

In Paris, clashes between demonstrators and riot police continued into the evening, with officers using tear gas and water cannon to disperse crowds. Buildings were set on fire in the capital and in other areas, including Limoges, where a major blaze at the town hall caused part of the roof to collapse.

Looting was reported in several cities, alongside widespread vandalism targeting city halls and businesses. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said 150 police officers were injured during the unrest.

Earlier in the day, the main march in Paris had appeared largely peaceful, with young participants describing themselves as peaceful demonstrators seeking change that they felt was not happening.
