Pupil arrested after shooting two teachers at French school
A 14-year-old pupil has been arrested after shooting a principal and a teacher at a middle school in Aubagne, near Marseille, in southern France on Monday morning.
Regional officials told French media that the boy brought a shotgun hidden inside a guitar case into Lakanal middle school before opening fire. He was then restrained by a member of staff.
No children were injured in the incident. Aubagne Mayor Jean-Pierre Squillari said the two teachers were being treated for injuries that are not life-threatening.
The Marseille prosecutor's office said it has opened an investigation into attempted murder.
Local media, citing police sources, reported that the shooting does not appear to be linked to ongoing protests over school conditions.
French media also reported that the suspect's father was taken into custody after weapons were discovered during a search of the family home. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez later confirmed that both of the boy's parents had been detained.
Martine Vassal, president of the Bouches-du-Rhône departmental council, told reporters that the pupil entered the school, located about 11 miles east of Marseille, carrying a gun before several shots were heard.
