Thousands of students took to the streets of Tirana, Albania's capital, attacking several government buildings on the second day of violent anti-government demonstrations.

The protests began outside the education ministry on Tuesday, with students demanding improved university conditions and better job opportunities.

By Wednesday, part of the education ministry building had been set alight, while the prime minister's office, the finance ministry, the interior ministry and nearby businesses were also targeted.

Albania's Deputy Prime Minister Albana Koçiu urged protesters to remain calm and show restraint, stating that Albania did not need destruction in order to achieve change.

Dozens of demonstrators wearing gas masks and balaclavas were seen throwing rocks and firecrackers at the gates of the education ministry.

Riot police clashed with protesters, deploying tear gas and water cannons in an effort to disperse the crowds.

One protester told reporters that the demonstration represented the concerns of all Albanians, not just students.
