Grand Palais and Musée d'Orsay Open Joint Cézanne Retrospective Today

A major retrospective on Paul Cézanne opens today at the Grand Palais's Galeries Nationales, jointly organized with the Musée d'Orsay in a pairing that reflects just how central the painter has become to both institutions' collections.

What the Exhibition Covers

Titled Cézanne et nous, the show runs from September 23, 2026, through January 17, 2027, and traces the artist's influence across generations of painters who followed him, rather than presenting his career in strict biographical order. The framing places Cézanne less as a historical figure to be studied and more as a continuing presence in how modern painting developed, tracking the specific techniques and compositional choices later artists borrowed and reworked from his still lifes, landscapes and figure studies.

Cézanne worked largely outside the Parisian art establishment of his own lifetime, based mostly in Aix-en-Provence and showing infrequently at the official Salon. That distance from the mainstream art world of the 1870s and 1880s is part of what the exhibition uses as its throughline: a painter working in relative isolation who nonetheless became one of the most studied references for the generations of artists who came after him, from the Cubists to painters working well into the twentieth century.

Why Two Major Institutions Are Behind It

The joint organization between the Grand Palais and the Musée d'Orsay isn't a routine partnership. The Musée d'Orsay holds one of the largest public collections of Cézanne's work anywhere, making it a natural lender and co-curator for a show of this scale, while the Grand Palais's Galeries Nationales offer the exhibition space to stage a retrospective at a size the Orsay's own rooms couldn't accommodate on their own. Pairing the two allows the show to bring together loans and permanent holdings that would otherwise be split across two separate, smaller presentations.

Part of a Wider Autumn Season

The opening lands in the middle of an unusually packed cultural calendar for Paris this season, alongside the Sofia Coppola-collaborated Marie Antoinette exhibition that opened at Versailles the day before, and the new Lady Liberty exhibition on the Statue of Liberty's Parisian origins running at the Musée des Arts et Métiers. Taken together, late September is shaping into one of the denser stretches on the city's museum calendar in recent memory, timed to coincide with the traditional post-summer return of both residents and visitors to the city.
