Widespread agricultural devastation has been reported across Spain and Portugal following the arrival of Storm Marta, which has brought relentless rainfall, powerful winds, and hazardous conditions to the Iberian Peninsula. The succession of recent storms has resulted in extensive flooding, infrastructure disruptions, and significant economic losses for the region's farming sector.
In both countries, large swathes of farmland have been inundated, with Spanish agricultural groups assessing damage in the millions of euros. Key vegetable crops, including broccoli, carrots, and cauliflowers, are submerged beneath floodwaters, severely impacting this season's harvest. The persistent rainfall has left thousands of hectares of arable land unusable, with many growers expressing concern over the long-term impact on their livelihoods and regional food supplies.
Emergency services have responded to multiple fatalities linked to the severe weather. In northern Spain, a snowplow operator lost his life after his vehicle fell down a steep embankment amidst heavy snowfall in the El Pico mountain region. In Portugal, a man drowned after being swept away by a swollen river in the Portalegre area. Since the onslaught of the previous storm, Leonardo, five fatalities have been recorded in total, highlighting the growing risk posed by extreme weather events.
The southern Spanish region of Andalusia has been particularly affected, with over 11,000 residents forced to evacuate their homes due to rising water levels. The transportation network has also sustained major disruptions, as nearly 170 roads have been closed across Spain, and rail services have suffered extensive delays and cancellations in Portugal. Local authorities in both countries have issued elevated weather warnings, with Spain's meteorological agency, AEMET, cautioning of further snowfall, hazardous coastal conditions, and additional rainfall as Storm Marta continues its course.
Portugal's agriculture ministry has released preliminary estimates indicating that losses to the agricultural and forestry sectors may reach approximately 750 million euros, underscoring the scale of the disaster. The ministry warned that these figures could climb as the storm intensifies and assessments continue.
Beyond the immediate damage to agriculture, secondary hazards have emerged in storm-hit areas. In the Serrania de Ronda mountain range in Malaga, residents have reported tremors and ground instability, raising concerns about potential landslides. Local councils have reassured residents that there is currently no imminent threat, but scientific teams from the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) have been dispatched to monitor the situation closely.
Along the Guadalquivir River in Cordoba, rapid rises in water level have forced the evacuation of several residential districts. Authorities have warned that the river is expected to peak over the weekend, with further flooding likely. Efforts are underway to support affected communities and mitigate further risks as the storm progresses.
With the region bracing for ongoing adverse weather, the agricultural sector is calling for urgent government assistance and support measures to address the widespread losses. Recovery efforts are expected to be extensive, as both Spain and Portugal contend with the aftermath of one of the most destructive storm cycles in recent years.
