French Lawmakers Debate Epstein Investigation Amid Political Fallout

Calls for an official inquiry into the French connections of the late financier Jeffrey Epstein have sparked debate among French lawmakers, following the emergence of new files linking prominent figures to the scandal. While left-wing parliamentarians advocate for a parliamentary investigation, government officials maintain that the matter should be handled exclusively by judicial authorities.

The issue intensified after leftist political leaders from La France insoumise (LFI) pressed for the creation of a cross-party parliamentary commission to examine potential links between Epstein and French political circles. The controversy reached a new height when former culture minister Jack Lang resigned from his position as head of the Arab World Institute in Paris after being named in documents associated with Epstein's offshore activities. Lang, who is 86 years old, has denied any wrongdoing and stated that his only interactions with Epstein were related to philanthropy. His daughter, Caroline Lang, who was also referenced in the files as a shareholder in an offshore company created by Epstein, stepped down from her role on the board of a foundation supporting LGBTQ youth and previously resigned from her position with a major film producers' union.

French prosecutors have initiated a preliminary investigation into potential tax fraud involving Jack Lang and his daughter following their appearance in the newly released files. However, authorities have clarified that being named in the files does not itself constitute evidence of criminal activity. In the United States, prosecutors confirmed in early February that no further charges would be filed after reviewing over three million items made public at the end of January.

President Macron has sought to distance France from the ongoing developments, stating that the Epstein affair primarily concerns the United States and its legal system. He urged that the French justice system should address any domestic aspects, while refraining from engaging in public debates surrounding the issue. Macron also encouraged the media to prioritize responsible journalism, noting that the release of large volumes of government files has the potential to fuel speculation and conspiracy theories.
