Iranian authorities have increased their enforcement measures against internal dissent following a recent surge in nationwide protests. The latest developments include additional arrests of opposition figures and activists, even as the government demonstrates interest in resuming nuclear negotiations with the United States.
On Monday, Iranian security forces detained several members of the main reformist coalition, among them Javad Emam, the coalition's spokesperson. The arrests came in the wake of positive diplomatic discussions held in Oman between Iranian and US officials, signaling a potential thaw in relations concerning Iran's nuclear activities.
Among those recently targeted by authorities is Hossein Karoubi, son of long-standing opposition leader Mehdi Karoubi, who has been under house arrest since participating in the 2009 Green Movement protests. The escalation follows a period of intense government response to one of the most significant protest movements since the Islamic Republic's establishment in 1979. The government has attributed the unrest to foreign influence, particularly from the United States and Israel, labeling the demonstrations as externally instigated riots.
While domestic suppression intensifies, Iranian officials have simultaneously expressed readiness to engage in further dialogue with Washington. Iranian atomic agency authorities have indicated a willingness to consider reducing the country's stockpile of highly enriched uranium if comprehensive sanctions are lifted. This process, known as 'downblending,' would reduce the enrichment level of uranium, thereby lengthening the time required to produce material suitable for nuclear weapons. Tehran maintains that its nuclear program serves civilian purposes, a claim met with skepticism by the US and many Western allies.
Recent diplomatic efforts have focused on nuclear issues, but the United States and Israel have signaled interest in expanding the agenda to include Iran's ballistic missile program and its regional activities involving non-state groups. Iranian officials have responded to these overtures with cautious optimism, emphasizing the need for clarity and trust in future negotiations.
Despite these diplomatic moves, the government has not relaxed its internal stance. Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi, a prominent human rights advocate, received additional prison sentences over the weekend, adding to her already lengthy incarceration for her activism against the death penalty and mandatory dress codes for women. Other reformist leaders, including Azar Mansouri, have also been arrested in recent days. The reform movement, which supported the incumbent president in the last election, has faced ongoing pressure as authorities continue to detain its key figures.
The number of casualties and arrests resulting from the protests remains contested. Official sources have reported over 3,000 fatalities, the majority identified as security personnel or bystanders. However, independent organizations claim the real toll is significantly higher, with thousands of protesters reportedly killed and tens of thousands detained since the beginning of the turmoil.
While international human rights groups have voiced concern over the Iranian government's actions, the United States has not directly addressed the crackdown since the recent diplomatic exchanges began. The situation in Iran continues to draw attention as the country navigates both heightened internal security measures and renewed engagement with the international community over its nuclear program.
